KAWASEMAN&MUCHA

The Brand Story of Kawaseman Orimono and Mucha

ABOUT

Mucha’s works continue to captivate audiences at exhibitions around the world.
Through the fusion of his magnificent art and the master craftsmanship of Nishijin weaving, a new dimension of Mucha has been brought to life.

Artist

Alfons Maria Mucha

Alphonse Mucha was a painter, illustrator, and graphic artist born in 1860 in Ivančice, Moravia (in what is now the Czech Republic).
Not only did he create designs, but he also produced numerous illustrations, commercial advertisements, and decorative panels, becoming a leading figure of Art Nouveau in Paris.
He expressed a wide range of motifs—such as stars, jewels, and flowers—through elegant female figures, symbolized by the flowing curves of their hair, set against lavish Arabian-inspired backgrounds.
Major Works: Gismonda (1894), The Zodiac (1896), The Arts (1898), The Slav Epic (1912–1926), and others.

Concept

Mr. John Mucha, great-grandson of Alphonse Mucha

Mr. John Mucha, the head of the Mucha Foundation, is also deeply knowledgeable about Japanese culture.
For the production of this collaborative collection, we invited him to Kyoto, where he personally supervised key elements such as the design and color scheme in front of the artisans involved in each stage of the Nishijin weaving process.

Work

Under the supervision of Mr. John Mucha

Mr. John Mucha, the head of the Mucha Foundation, is also deeply knowledgeable about Japanese culture.
For the creation of this collaborative collection, we invited him to Kyoto, where he personally supervised key elements such as the design and color palette directly with the artisans involved in each stage of the Nishijin weaving process.

This is a scene from a design meeting with a master pattern designer (zuanshi), who creates the original designs for Nishijin textiles, discussing the composition and other design elements.

It is an extremely challenging process, as the obi design must be created while faithfully reproducing Mucha’s original artworks.
