Kawase Mitsuru Textiles and Alphonse Mucha

Kawase Mitsuru Textiles, founded in 1852 (late Edo period), is a long-established Nishijin weaving house in Kyoto. Recognized by Kyoto Prefecture as a “Traditional Kyoto Company” for its history of over a century, it continues to preserve its rich heritage while creating obi that resonate with modern sensibilities.

Alphonse Mucha, a leading artist of the late 19th-century Art Nouveau movement, is renowned for his graceful curves, vibrant colors, and decorative style inspired by exotic motifs, classical antiquity, and elements of Eastern art, including Japanese aesthetics.

Blending Japanese Tradition with Global Art

Drawing inspiration from Mucha’s iconic works, such as “Zodiac” and “The Four Arts”, Kawase Mitsuru’s artisans bring together intricate Nishijin weaving techniques and Mucha’s elegant curves. The result is a beauty that appears as if a painting has been directly woven into the fabric—garnering acclaim at art exhibitions and showcases both in Japan and abroad.

With over 160 years of expertise and a spirit of innovation, Kawase Mitsuru Textiles continues to imbue its obi with a unique brilliance born from the fusion of tradition and art.
